- The intervention consists in the refurbishment of a 2 levels penthouse flat inside a 1970s residential building in the coastal neighbourhood of Ostia, Rome. The project is the transformation of a traditional flat layout into an open space, although keeping a level of privacy of the various areas; the concept is the substitution of the spatial idea of scenarios sequence to the traditional sequence of rooms. The design of the floor and the perforated partitions have the task of defining the single areas, at same time not obstructing the view, they leave the depth of the spaces unaltered. Natural light has been carried into the flat describing a dense sequence of bright and in shade areas. The staircase has been isolated with trasparent panels, so to create, together with the lightwell above the stairs, a wind chimney. The air depression formed by the chimney allows the exit of hot air and the entrance of clean air from the windows. The result is an apartment where the air is constantly renewed without air conditioning. The timber floor is designed in a tatami pattern spaced out by smooth concrete floor areas near the most exposed areas like the fireplace or the kitchen. In the living area, designed as an open space, the functional spaces are separated or integrated to the main space through sliding expanded metal panels.
