- "Mascherone" is a lamp made with a curved brass sheet lampshade and an industrial black porcelain lamp holder. The "tongue" shields the light by directing it towards the ceiling and towards the brass surface which indirectly diffuses a golden light into the room. A mascherone is a sculpture or decoration depicting a human, animal or imaginary face. In the Mannerist and Baroque periods, as part of the revaluation of the grotesque, it was widely used in the decoration of the keystones of portals and door frames, where they were often depicted smiling or even with their tongues sticking out. The origin of this custom is thought to derive from ancient Greece (in particular from the Hellenistic age) and it was considered a sign of welcome while in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies it also acquired a character of protection from misfortune.
