- The design for the museum park of the Erbil citadel meets the need to enhance the architectural heritage and the will of the local administration to broaden its cultural offerings, combining spaces for leisure and relax with cultural activities. The geometric structure of the project derives from the reinterpretation of the historic fabric of the town; its irregularity is perceived as a value and is used to draw a fabric-park, which promotes a harmonious relationship between the new expansion to the north and the citadel. The park is then thought of as a large mosaic of colored tiles (thematic gardens, specific functional areas), as a large carpet that unfolds before the eyes of the visitor who looks out from the north gate of the historic city. Looked at from the city, the park emphasizes and frames the citadel. Leisure activities and recreative facilities including bars, dining spaces, table game areas or artigianal activities are located on the northen margin, near to the recently built aeras of the town. This configuration defines a filter zone between the town activities and the green of the park beyond this. The entrances, placed in strategic positions, emphasize striking panoramic views of the old town. The green spaces are divided into different areas according to their specific character: buffer areas, more neutral, where you can perform various activities; thematic areas, strongly characterized as the three gardens, which at the foot of the citadel near the north gate, emphasize the monumentality with a more marked reference to the historical tissue; areas with a rich vegetation, lightly characterized and reserved mainly for relaxing activities as picnics and games.
